Of the multitude of architectual wonders that India holds, none is more visually appealing to me than the seemingly simple stepwell. Light and shadow interplay in geometric zigs and zags, hypnotizing you as the angles within slowly change. In the seasonally dry north of India, water becomes a priceless commodity. From the 2nd century, early empires would match the need by digging staggeringly deep wells into the rock of the earth down far enough to expose the water table below. Lining the walls of those pits with steps would permit access for daily usage throughout the year. The British would dig modern wells and use pumps to relegate the stepwell to history, but the massive earthen scars still exist across the north of the country. Built beginning in the 8th century, Chand Baori is one of the largest and deepest in India (30 meters deep). Stunning! * Our voyage to Agra would also take us through the ancient capital of Fatehpur Sikri. Before the palace and city, it was a small outpost here that the Mughal emperor Akbar would come to visit a noted holy man. At that point stunted in his aims, Akbar was seeking blessings to concieve a son and heir. The gods would smile on that request and his son, Jahangir, would be born shortly after. To celebrate the blessing, the emperor would build his new capital here. But conflict elsewhere and the dry conditions atop the hill would doom the city and the capital would shift to Pakistan's Lahore before returning to Agra and finally shifting to Delhi. What Rome is to the Catholic, Jerusalem to millions of Christians, and Mecca to the Moslems, that Benares is to the Hindoos. It lies beside the sacred river, Ganges, along whose hallowed waters Buddha taught hundreds of years before the founder of Christianity was born. Hither come hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year to bathe in this stream, which is supposed to purify them from all sin. From the temples and dwellings on the banks of the Ganges certain “ghats,” or flights of stone steps lead downward to the waves. One of these is called the “Burning Ghat,” since here cremation is continually going on! It is a shocking sight. Rough piles of wood about four feet high are here constructed and on these funeral pyres the bodies of the dead are placed. When all is ready, the nearest male relative of the deceased applies to it a lighted brand. The angry flames leap heavenward at once and lick the body lying there with yellow tongues. It seems incredible that friends and relatives can gaze upon such a sight, which is beyond description ghastly and revolting. At last, however, a shapeless mass of ashes lies upon the shore, and these are thrown upon the river’s breast and roll on toward the sea, symbol of that Eternity towards which the dead man’s soul has winged its flight. It is the dearest wish of the pious Hindoo that he may die on the banks of the Ganges, and be at last committed to its soft embrace.“ (from John L.
