I haven’t done these in so long lol honestly once I started doing sumo stance a year ago I just focused on building strength in that because of all the leg growth I was gaining from it. There are many opinions on which stance is “easier”. It depends on the individual though. While the range of motion is less in the sumo stance, there is more quadricep activation in sumo compared to conventional (more erector spinae activation). Also, hip mobility plays a huge role in a “safe” and effective sumo stance. My personal input on this is: if your goal is to grow size and strength in your lower body, sumo is more beneficial for that than conventional. If your goal is to gain more strength in your back while gaining size in your hammies and glutes, then conventional is the way. .

COACHING CUES:
- Feet shoulder width apart, bar over midfoot ✅
- Hinge at the hips with arms straight down and once hands touch the bar then bend the knees to bring shins to bar. This will help get YOUR ideal position ✅
- Whatever grip you choose, make sure it’s being done effectively. Either one still follow this.. ➡️
- “Bend the bar”. This will help engage your lats and create a more stable position throughout your torso ✅
- Tri-pod feet. 3 points of contact mentally (big toe, pinky toe, and heel). For y’all flat footed ones, gotta work on creating that arch to get it. ✅
- Arms outside of knees. Drive knees “into” elbows to create more torque. Your arms are there to hold the bar, so there shouldn’t be any movement in your traps or from your arms that i see some people doing. They’re like hooks. ✅
- Once bar gets past knees, drive hips forward to complete the movement. (Lockout). This will come from glutes and hammies, not your lower back. Do NOT mistake this for hyperextending at the low back. ✅

Hopefully these cues help anyone that might need some guidance on their form. Everyone has different cues so this isn’t a “one size fits all” type of thing, but definitely is a good base to build from 💪🏽

WNBF Open Men’s Physique World Champion 🌎🥇🏆 - I wanted to wait until the professional stage shots had arrived before writing this post and by doing so it has given me the perfect amount of time to reflect on exactly what we have achieved this season and since we first stepped on stage last year. - 16 months months ago I entered my very first bodybuilding show in the MPD of a first timers show which fortunately I won and from that moment on I was hooked, maybe not actually on the experience of stage itself but certainly on the process of putting yourself in the position to be successful stood on one. - A few weeks later I entered my first @ukdfba show, a qualifier. It’s said you learn more in defeat than in victory and by placing 2nd to an athlete much better than me in nearly every department we realised exactly where we needed to improve and how hard we’d need to work to make ourselves competitive on the natural British stage. - Fast forward to November 16th 2019, a month after winning the UKDFBA British finals and earning my invite to compete at the @wnbfofficial World Championships in New York and to a night I will never forget. Personally I feel a better way to shrug is to angle the torso forward. If you think of the traps as being a back muscle, by leaning forward we can put the muscle in to a position where it now works more directly against gravity. . Many people just think of the traps as the bits sticking out at the top of our shoulders, but they are huge muscles that run down the back. Standing upright, we only activate a small part of the upper most part of traps, and in fact lots of the strain is usually put through the neck extensors. And no one wants a stiff neck! . Some will disagree, of course, but this is my personal preference. ⭐️TAKE UP SPACE⭐️ - I didn’t touch on this in yesterday’s video because it deserves its own post entirely. So many people are anxious or feel intimidated about working out in the free weights area of their gym. And I get it. The free weights area in the first gym I went to was dark and cornered off. I never went up there. I felt like I didn’t belong and that people would judge me. It took me ages to break down that mindset of feeling like I didn’t belong there. But you have just as much right to work out in that space as anyone else and if you give it a try, you’ll see that those people you found intimidating are actually just there to focus on themselves, they don’t even notice you. Every single one of them also had a day where they stepped into the free weights as a beginner too, so they know exactly how you feel. Now, there’s nothing I love more than using the free weights like my play ground. My friends lift more than me and push me to do better every time. Take up space. CONVENTIONAL DEADS . I haven’t done these in so long lol honestly once I started doing sumo stance a year ago I just focused on building strength in that because of all the leg growth I was gaining from it. There are many opinions on which stance is “easier”. It depends on the individual though. While the range of motion is less in the sumo stance, there is more quadricep activation in sumo compared to conventional (more erector spinae activation). Also, hip mobility plays a huge role in a “safe” and effective sumo stance. My personal input on this is: if your goal is to grow size and strength in your lower body, sumo is more beneficial for that than conventional. If your goal is to gain more strength in your back while gaining size in your hammies and glutes, then conventional is the way. . . COACHING CUES: - Feet shoulder width apart, bar over midfoot ✅ - Hinge at the hips with arms straight down and once hands touch the bar then bend the knees to bring shins to bar. This will help get YOUR ideal position ✅ - Whatever grip you choose, make sure it’s being done effectively. Either one still follow this.. ➡️ - “Bend the bar”. This will help engage your lats and create a more stable position throughout your torso ✅ - Tri-pod feet. 3 points of contact mentally (big toe, pinky toe, and heel). For y’all flat footed ones, gotta work on creating that arch to get it. ✅ - Arms outside of knees. Drive knees “into” elbows to create more torque. Your arms are there to hold the bar, so there shouldn’t be any movement in your traps or from your arms that i see some people doing. They’re like hooks. ✅ - Once bar gets past knees, drive hips forward to complete the movement. (Lockout). This will come from glutes and hammies, not your lower back. Do NOT mistake this for hyperextending at the low back. ✅ . . Hopefully these cues help anyone that might need some guidance on their form. Everyone has different cues so this isn’t a “one size fits all” type of thing, but definitely is a good base to build from 💪🏽
