🤯 Did You Know: Octopuses can breathe through their skin! Octopuses have been observed out of the water hunting for crabs on shore, but how do they breathe? Their secret is cutaneous respiration! In certain circumstances, 40% of their oxygen intake can come through their skin. When octopus skin stays moist, a very limited amount of gas exchange can occur through passive diffusion, this only allows an adult octopus to survive on land and in between damp rock beds for short periods of time. I’ve noticed lately that my life has had a very cyclical framework to it in some ways. A major theme I’ve noticed is me returning to a place I’ve been to before but as a different, stronger, and more mature person. Those examples can be taken literal too, like my first return to Bryce Canyon since my life-changing solo trip that I’ve talked about before. Seeing the beautiful hoodoos in spring last time and returning now to them all covered up in snow felt like I was seeing an old friend who’s changed as much as I have (and yes, I realize how completely silly that sounds). Anyways, I will probably experience this same feeling of “returning to the old as someone new” in a few days when I make my much-anticipated return to my home to see my friends in Vermont. Cardiology has been successfully passed and completed, and there are just a few loose ends to go before I can fly home. Can’t believe my white coat ceremony is coming up when I come back after break. Hope to spend some time in Moab before that happens, too. Life is crazy. This here is a Giant Anteater(Myrmecophaga tridactyla). They are on the list of “vulnerable species”. They have an unknown longevity in the wild, but can live up to 25 years in captivity. Want to know their diet? Over 30,000 ants or termites per day. Now that’s a lot of bugs! In the zoo they get a supplemental diet pellet that consists of a mix of these insects. This tends to make their time in zoos and conservation centers not fun because they need to partake in their natural hobbies which is knocking into ant hills and licking around for that tasty snack. Their body is designed for that exact job. They have a elongated snout equipped with a thin long tongue extending longer than their head! This causes a terrible range of sight, but creates a high sense of smell. Their most interesting animal fact, is their body temperature is 91 degrees which is the lowest temperature for any mammal. . . . . My favorite shot of the year, hands down. It's the first one I want to pull up and show people when they ask me what I do for fun. I tell them, this is what I do. I wander the piney woods searching for carnivorous plants and orchids and scenes like this that make me feel small. To me it's a sign that my photography is improving and that I can better tell the stories of these forgotten landscapes. At the surface, it is just a photo. But I want it to be more than that. I want people to see it and understand that there was a time in this region's history when scenes like this would have been commonplace; when the sun light shone down through a sparse canopy of the Longleaf Pine dominated woodlands and savannas and reached down to dozens and dozens of different plants that all depended upon wildfires to keep the sun shining down upon them. This is their story. A story of flames and ashes and rebirth that cycled through on such a regular basis that plants began to rely on it.
