One year ago this weekend, my mom @vickyrileykeyes and I made it to Everest Basecamp! Scroll to the last photo for 😂😂😂 * * I think about this trip often because it challenged me in ways I’ve never thought possible and whenever I’m stressed or think something is hard, I think about reaching Everest Basecamp. * * We trained, we prepped & we prepared as much as we could, but I’m not sure you can ever be totally ‘prepared’ for altitude. * * Food poisoning got me the day before we started the trek. 😭 I was severely sidelined. My mom walked very slowly with me to the first stop and each day I started to feel a bit better. That was before the altitude got me. * * At first we were just exhausted, walking uphill in what felt like slow-motion and heaving like we had just run a sprint. Mild bouts of nausea and small headaches creeped upon us as we inched our way up. Soon, my appetite disappeared, I couldn’t eat, sleeping became more difficult - despite physical exhaustion, headaches, upset stomach and constant nausea. Altitude was taking its toll. * * My mom experienced similar effects but to a lesser degree. She was my rock, strong and determined, leading the way up the mountain with constant positive encouragement - a reflection of how she influences me in my life every single day, always showing me the way. * * When we made it to Basecamp, we cried. Then we went for a wee 😂 then faced the long & cold trek back. By the time we got back to the tea house in Gorak Shep I was a wreck. I lost 10lbs in 9 days, was still unable to sleep and couldn’t keep any food down - I was mentally fatiguing. We made the decision to helicopter out of altitude. We said good bye to our group and fearless tour leaders and waited for our ride. 🚁🚁🚁 * * My mom wanted to snap one last photo (last pic) that we now laugh hysterically at - my mom looks like a god dang supermodel and I look like a turtle, swollen and crying. Nothing will ever be that hard or as special as that trip. * * * Push yourself to your limits and you’ll realize that you’re stronger then you think you are and capable of so much.
