What does a PM do? I get asked this question a lot because new grads and students want to know if the role might be a good fit for them. I'm 4 weeks in and I think I can finally describe what I do. Just to make things a little extra confusit a PM can stand for program manager, product manager, project manager and any other p-word manager you can think of. At Microsoft PM is a program manager. Essentially what PMs have to make sure that a program is doing well. This means making sure that - 1. The program is doing what it's meant to do - so keeping bugs in check and making sure things are working how they should be 2. The users like it and know how to use it - so understanding how they feel about it and what they might like to change and making sure there's enough content and documentation to actually use it the way it was intended 3. Improving and adding on to it - this means working with developers, designers and anyone else you might need to add new features and guiding it through the release cycle Thanks for tuning into my attempt at explaining my job.
